Sauna is a relaxing pleasure, but there is more to it than that. Spending time regularly in the sauna might actually increase your chances of living a long and healthy life. New research shows that regular sauna baths can reduce the risk of heart attacks with up to 63 per cent.
A research team from Finland has attracted attention with a study showing that regular sauna bathing has dramatic and measurable effects on health.
For 20 years, researchers monitored 2,000 middle-aged men. During this period, it became clear that those who sauna bathed regularly had a significantly lower risk both to suffer and to die from cardiovascular diseases.
The study was led by Dr. Jari Laukannen, cardiologist at the University of Eastern Finland. The relationship between health and time spent in the sauna was very strong, even when other potential variables were included in the analyses, he says. Further research will be needed to investigate this, says Dr. Jari Lukannen.
However, the results do not surprise Dr. Thomas H. Lee, cardiologist at Harvard-affiliated Brigham and Women’s Hospital and founding editor of the Harvard Heart Letter. The cardiovascular effects of sauna have been well documented in the past. It lowers blood pressure, and there is every reason to believe that its effects are good for blood vessels, he states in an article published in Harvard Health Publications.
